Hampton Sides is an award-winning historian, journalist, and New York Times bestselling author celebrated for narrative nonfiction that brings history vividly to life. His work includes Ghost Soldiers (PEN USA Award), Blood and Thunder (Time’s 10 Best Books of 2006), Hellhound on His Trail, In the Kingdom of Ice, and On Desperate Ground (Washington Post Best Books of 2018). Known for combining meticulous research with cinematic storytelling, Sides explores epic moments of human courage and ambition. His latest book, The Wide Wide Sea (2024), chronicles Captain James Cook’s final voyage and was named one of The New York Times Ten Best Books of 2024 and featured on Barack Obama’s Summer Reading List. Sides is editor-at-large for Outside magazine and a frequent contributor to publications including The New Yorker and National Geographic. A frequent lecturer, Hampton divides his time between Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Colorado College, where he teaches narrative nonfiction and serves as Journalist in Residence.
